We provide dental crowns at our Coolamon clinic for patients across Ellenbrook, Swan Valley and Aveley.
What Are Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns, also known as dental caps, are custom-made restorations that are placed over a damaged or decayed tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. They encase the entire visible portion of the tooth above the gumline and provide protection and support to weakened or compromised teeth.
Types of Dental Crowns
Each type of dental crown has its unique advantages, and the choice depends on factors like the location of the tooth, the patient’s preferences, and the functional requirements.
Your dentist will work closely with you to determine the most suitable dental crown material to meet your specific needs and provide you with a beautiful and long-lasting dental restoration.
Porcelain crowns are popular for their natural appearance and ability to closely match the colour of adjacent teeth. They are an excellent choice for front teeth or highly visible areas as they provide a seamless blend with the rest of the smile.
Porcelain crowns are stain-resistant and durable, making them a preferred option for cosmetic dental restorations.
Similar to porcelain crowns, ceramic crowns are also tooth-coloured and provide an aesthetically pleasing result. They are preferred for patients with metal allergies as they are metal-free.
Ceramic crowns are best suited for front teeth due to their natural appearance, but they may not be as strong as metal-based crowns for molars.
Metal crowns are composed of alloys like gold, platinum, or base metal alloys. They are renowned for their exceptional strength and durability, making them an ideal choice for molars and teeth that undergo significant biting forces.
Metal crowns are less tooth-coloured and more noticeable, making them suitable for less visible areas in the mouth.
PFM crowns combine the strength of metal with the aesthetic appeal of porcelain. The inner metal structure provides stability, while the outer layer of porcelain offers a tooth-coloured appearance.
PFM crowns are versatile and can be used in both front and back teeth, providing a balance between durability and aesthetics.

How Is a Dental Crown Procedure Performed?
In order for there to be enough room for a crown to be placed onto your tooth, the tooth must be shaved circumferentially and prepared. If the tooth is heavily broken down or root canal treated, the dentist may place a post and/or filling into the tooth which has been planned for a crown. This assists the crown in holding onto the remaining tooth structure.
Once the crown preparation is complete, a mould is taken so that the dental technician can accurately fabricate a crown to fit the preparation and also suit the rest of your teeth. The technician uses CAD/CAM technology to manufacture the crown which is quality control checked by our experienced dentists prior to fixating it onto your tooth.
