You can trust Coolamon Dental Centre for top-quality root canal treatment, as we prioritise your oral health and comfort throughout the entire process.
What Is the Purpose of a Root Canal Treatment?
A root canal treatment is done to save a severely damaged or infected tooth and prevent the need for extraction.
When the soft tissue inside the tooth, known as the pulp, becomes infected or inflamed due to deep decay, cracks, or trauma, it can cause severe pain and discomfort.
What Causes the Pulp to be Inflamed?
The pulp inside the tooth becomes inflamed due to bacterial infection. When a tooth is affected by deep decay, cracks, chips, or trauma, it can create pathways for bacteria to enter the pulp chamber. Once bacteria enter the pulp, it can lead to an infection, causing the pulp to become inflamed.
The inflammation is the body’s natural response to the infection, and it can lead to various symptoms such as pain, sensitivity, swelling, and even abscess formation.

What to Expect at a Root Canal Treatment
This comprehensive list outlines the step-by-step process, shedding light on what happens during the treatment, so you can feel informed and confident about your dental care journey.
Our dentist will carefully examine your tooth and may take X-rays to assess the condition of the root canals and surrounding structures.
To ensure a pain-free experience, the affected area will be numbed with local anaesthesia before the procedure begins.
A small opening is made in the tooth’s surface to access the infected or damaged pulp inside the pulp chamber and root canals.
Using specialised instruments, the infected pulp is gently removed from the tooth’s interior.
The root canals are meticulously cleaned and shaped to prepare them for filling.
Biocompatible material called gutta-percha is used to fill the cleaned root canals, sealing them off from further infection. In some cases, a temporary filling may be placed to protect the tooth until a permanent restoration is placed.
After the root canal procedure, a dental crown or filling is often placed to restore the tooth’s strength and appearance.
