Our dental team are experienced in diagnosing and treating gum disease at all stages.
What Is Gum Disease?
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a common oral health condition that affects the tissues supporting the teeth.
It is caused by bacterial infection and inflammation of the gums (gingiva) and, if left untreated, can lead to damage to the bone and other structures that support the teeth.
Types of Gum Disease
Gum disease is a common oral health issue that can affect anyone. Understanding the various types of gum disease is crucial for early detection and effective treatment.
Gingivitis
Gingivitis is the mildest form of gum disease and represents inflammation of the gingiva (gums). It is primarily caused by the accumulation of plaque on the teeth, which contains bacteria that irritate the gum tissue.
The early signs of gingivitis include red, swollen, and tender gums that may bleed easily, especially during brushing or flossing. Fortunately, gingivitis is reversible with proper oral hygiene and regular dental cleanings.
If left untreated, it can progress to more advanced stages of gum disease.
Periodontitis
Periodontitis is a more severe form of gum disease that occurs when gingivitis is not treated promptly.
In periodontitis, the infection spreads below the gum line, causing the gums to pull away from the teeth and form periodontal pockets. Bacteria accumulate in these pockets, leading to further inflammation and damage to the bone and connective tissues that support the teeth. As the condition progresses, the pockets deepen, and the supporting structures of the teeth become compromised. This can eventually lead to tooth loss if not properly managed.
Periodontitis requires professional treatment, such as scaling and root planing (deep cleaning), antibiotic therapy, and in severe cases, surgical intervention.

Diagnosing Gum Disease
At Coolamon Dental Centre, our skilled dentists employ a thorough diagnostic approach to identify gum disease and its severity accurately. The diagnosis typically involves:
Visual Examination
Our dental team will visually inspect your gums for signs of inflammation, redness, swelling, and bleeding. They will also examine your teeth for plaque and tartar buildup.
Measuring Pocket Depths
Using a small dental probe, we measure the depth of the spaces between your gums and teeth (periodontal pockets). Deeper pockets may indicate advanced gum disease, as healthy gums typically have shallow pockets.
X-rays
X-rays play a vital role in diagnosing gum disease. They allow us to assess the condition of the bone supporting your teeth and identify any bone loss, a critical indicator of periodontal disease.
Treatment Options for Gum Disease
At Coolamon Dental Centre, we provide a comprehensive range of treatment options tailored to suit the specific needs of each patient:
Deep Cleaning (Scaling and Root Planing)
This non-surgical procedure involves meticulously removing plaque and tartar from above and below the gumline (scaling). The roots of the teeth are then smoothed (root planing) to discourage further plaque buildup, allowing the gums to heal and reattach to the teeth.
Antibiotic Therapy
In some cases, we may prescribe antibiotics to help control bacterial infection and reduce inflammation. Antibiotics can be administered orally or placed directly into the periodontal pockets during the deep cleaning process.
Surgical Interventions
For more advanced cases of gum disease, surgical treatments may be necessary. Procedures like flap surgery, bone grafting, and tissue regeneration can address significant gum and bone damage, helping to stabilise teeth and prevent further deterioration.
