What Is Composite Bonding?

Composite bonding is a quick, minimally invasive procedure that improves the look of your teeth. Your dentist will apply a colour-matched composite resin to the surface of your teeth, shape and sculpt it to achieve the look you want, and polish it to give it a natural look.

Unlike cosmetic procedures like dental crowns or veneers, dental bonding requires very little preparation of your teeth. Your dentist may roughen the surface of your teeth to help the resin bond effectively, but it’s much less invasive than many other procedures.

What Can Composite Bonding Fix?

Dental bonding can be a good solution for a variety of tooth problems. We’ve summarised these in the table below:

Composite Bonding Treatments
Chipped or Cracked Teeth Bonding can repair minor chips and cracks to restore your tooth’s original look and feel.
Discolouration If tooth whitening doesn’t whiten your teeth enough, composite bonding can cover up those stubborn stains.
Gaps Between Teeth Small gaps between teeth can be closed quickly and painlessly, without the need for braces!
Lengthening Short Teeth If you’ve got a shorter tooth that makes you feel self-conscious, bonding can balance out your smile.
Misshapen Teeth Irregularly shaped teeth can be reshaped to look more aesthetically pleasing.

Is Composite Bonding Right for You?

If you’ve got sizable gaps between your teeth, misaligned teeth, or your teeth are badly damaged, your dentist may suggest a different treatment. At Coolamon Dental Centre, we offer a variety of cosmetic dentistry solutions to suit your exact needs, including:

What to Expect During Composite Bonding Treatment

Your dental bonding procedure is straightforward and can be done in a single appointment. Here’s how it will go:

  1. Assessment: Your dentist will evaluate your teeth and discuss your aesthetic goals to make sure dental bonding will meet your needs.
  2. Preparation: Your dentist will slightly roughen the surface of your tooth enamel to make it easier for the resin to bond with it.
  3. Application: The resin, matched to the colour of your teeth, will be applied to the prepared surface.
  4. Shaping: Your dentist will meticulously mould and shape the resin to achieve your desired look, blending seamlessly with your natural teeth.
  5. Curing: Once the resin is perfectly shaped, your dentist will use a special light to harden it within minutes.
  6. Finishing Touches: The bonded tooth is then polished and refined to ensure a smooth and natural appearance.

How Long Does Dental Bonding Last?

With proper oral care, bonded teeth can last between 3 and 7 years. The lifespan of your bonded teeth depends on your oral care. Remember to get regular dental check-ups to maintain the integrity of the bonding.

How Much Does Composite Bonding Cost?

On average, you can expect to pay between $300 and $600 per tooth. Composite bonding prices vary, based on the condition of your teeth and how many teeth need bonding.

We offer various financing options to suit all needs and accept most health funds. However, we recommend consulting with your dental insurance provider before choosing composite treatment, as some may not cover the procedure if it’s for cosmetic purposes.

What’s the Difference Between Composite Bonding and Veneers?

Composites and veneers serve similar purposes, but they have some noticeable differences in how they address dental imperfections, like:

  • Material: Bonding uses resin, whereas veneers can use resin or porcelain.
  • Procedure: The bonding process can be completed in a single visit with minimal tooth preparation. Veneers require two visits and the removal of a small amount of tooth enamel from the tooth’s front surface.
  • Durability: Veneers generally last longer than composite bonding. Porcelain veneers can last up to 15 years with proper care, compared to 5 to 7 years for dental bonding.
  • Cost: Bonding is a more cost-effective solution, and it’s a good option for patients looking for budget-friendly cosmetic dental care.

How to Look After Composite Bonded Teeth

Maintaining your composite bonded teeth is crucial for preserving their appearance and extending their lifespan. Follow these essential care tips:

  • Good Oral Hygiene: Brush twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Floss daily to remove plaque.
  • Avoid Staining Foods and Beverages: Coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco can stain resin material. Limit them in your diet, and consider using a straw for darker liquids.
  • Prevent Damage: Avoid chewing on hard objects (ice, pens, fingernails) and biting directly into hard foods. If you grind your teeth at night, consider a mouth guard to protect the bonding material.
  • Regular Dental Visits: Schedule check-ups and cleanings every 6 months or as recommended by your dentist. These allow for the monitoring and maintenance of your bonded teeth.
  • Immediate Treatment for Issues: If you notice any sharp edges, chips, or discomfort in the bonded tooth, contact your dentist before it becomes a bigger dental issue.

Composite Bonding FAQs

Is Composite Bonding Painful?

No, it’s not painful. In almost all cases, no anaesthetic is necessary and the process itself is pain-free and minimally invasive.

Will It Look Natural?

Yes, bonding on your teeth will look natural, and nobody will be able to tell the difference. At Coolamon Dental Centre, our dentists are highly skilled with years of experience, so you can expect a perfectly natural-looking smile after your appointment.

Will Bonded Teeth Stain?

The resin used in dental bonding can become stained, just like your natural teeth. This is why maintaining excellent oral health and avoiding staining foods and drinks are still important even if you’ve had bonding done with composite material.

Can Composite Bonding Be Reversed?

Yes! Minimal tooth enamel is removed to bond to the teeth, so if necessary, it can be reversed.

Everyone working at Coolamon Dental are so helpful & friendly. Dr. Gen is so patient with me knowing I am terrified of going to the dentist. The ladies in reception put you at ease as soon as you come in the door. They are so friendly & have a laugh with you which helps when you are so nervous. The dentist explains everything that's going to be done so there are no surprises. The rooms are absolutely spotless. I now don't mind going to this dentist. Can highly recommend Coolamon Dental.

Shaun and Jenny were fantastic.
I came in for a toothache and they were able to fit me in. I'm a nervous patient and Shaun did an amazing job of calming my nerves and explaining the issue and options and then sorted the problem with minimal discomfort.

I'll be back for regular checkups!
